A laboratory oil bath is a piece of lab equipment used to heat samples at a controlled, uniform temperature. It is commonly used when temperatures higher than the boiling point of water (100 °C) are required.

Description

A laboratory oil bath consists of a container filled with heat-resistant oil that is heated using an electric heater or hot plate. Glassware such as test tubes, flasks, or reaction vessels are placed in the heated oil to warm the contents evenly.

Main Components

1. Container or bath vessel – Holds the oil (usually metal or heat-resistant glass).

2. Heating element – Provides heat to raise the oil temperature.

3. Temperature controller / thermometer – Monitors and regulates the temperature.

4. Oil medium – Usually silicone oil or mineral oil that can withstand high temperatures.

Working Principle

The heating element warms the oil, and the heat is transferred evenly through the oil to the immersed glassware. Oil is used because it has a higher boiling point than water, allowing temperatures of 100 °C to about 300 °C depending on the oil used.
