Water Bath

A water bath is a laboratory heating device that uses water as the heating medium. It heats samples placed in containers (like test tubes, flasks, etc.) via indirect contact through the water.

• Common Uses:
  • Enzyme reactions
  • Incubating cell cultures
  • Thawing samples
  • Gently heating flammable chemical.

Oil Bath

An oil bath uses thermal oil (typically silicone or mineral oil) as the heating medium instead of water. It allows for higher temperatures than a water bath.

• Common Uses:
  • Organic synthesis
  • Reflux reactions
  • High-temperature heating (>100 °C)
  • Heating substances that can’t tolerate water contact or require stable heat over 100 °C
